Scholarship Entry #2: John J.

I have high expectations for my education at The University of Alabama. My brother is a Chemical Engineer and is employed at the main office of Alabama Power. He has told me that many of his bosses graduated from Alabama. This is encouraging and reassures me of my desire to attend Alabama. I plan to begin classes this fall. After my freshman year at the University, I plan to co-op with Southern Company. My brother has stressed to me the importance of the co-op experience. He told me that when it comes to hiring college graduates the bosses always draw first from the students that already have work experience through the co-op program. This is great news for me because The University of Alabama has a wonderful reputation for placing students in the programs that are best fit for them. After my co-op experience I plan to return to Alabama and obtain my Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering. I then plan to get a job in one of the many plants that are in the great state of Alabama. Then, after getting some valuable work experience in the plants, I plan to transfer to the main office of Alabama Power in Birmingham.

The importance of what I will be able to do with my degree has became much more prevalent to me after the tornadoes of April 27, 2011. With my degree I will be able to help provide power to the great state of Alabama. After these storms the importance of power in our everyday lives has became very clear to everyone. Alabama Power was among the first companies to restore power to its customers. I believe it would be a very fulfilling career if I am given the opportunity to work with this prestigious company.

We have gas for our cars, lights in our houses, planes in the sky, and man has walked on the moon all because of the work of engineers. Others play a part but engineers are the most important. Any scholarship that I could be awarded would go a long way in helping me in my dreams of helping do all of these things. Thank you in advance for your kind consideration.
