Lee: Young & Free Taxes...Wait, What?
You may be asking yourself...”Lee, isn’t today the last day of tax season?” Yes it is! Time to start preparing for next year! YAAAY!!! (crickets) Actually, now is the best time to start getting ready to prepare your tax return for 2011 (unless, of course, you’ve already started, which is better). Here are some things we need to be doing NOW to get ready for next year!
- Get organized. Start keeping all of your check stubs, necessary purchase receipts, tuition statements, student loan and federal aid info in a safe place where you know you can find them easily.
- Keep everything. If you are like me, the urge to throw something away is all-too-consuming when you start to see envelopes, receipts and letters all piling up. Just take a few minutes each week to organize it all (see step 1) and you won’t have to deal with it until next year! Viola!
- Keep all of your files from THIS year and review them with as many know-it-alls as possible. It’s always good to have as many accountant-minded people that you trust to look over your things with you to make sure you got the most out of your return. There are many resources out there to help you do this yourself (posted at the bottom of the blog) but make sure you see an expert too just to make sure.
- Start thinking early-on when you want to be done with your tax return next year. Otherwise, you may end up like many people rushing to the post office this day next year hoping Uncle Sam is feeling generous this year.
Tax season is never fun. You could say it’s...Taxing? Eh? Am I right? (more crickets than last time) but we can make it a lot easier on ourselves by taking the proper precautions to do it the right way this time around!
Now let’s celebrate the end of this harsh season by drinking endless amounts of Caffeine at the ATO house on UNA’s campus tonight! Woo-Hoo! See you there at 9pm!
