Get a job.
Here's a quick little head's up for the jobless or job-seeking.
Some employers do what is called a "Hiring Hall". Check your local paper for any hiring halls that may be happening tomorrow. A Hiring Hall is where they accept applications, interview, and hire on the spot. There are usually no call-backs necessary and if your the real deal, you will walk out smiling.
Since I was a part of a Hiring Hall, as an employer last year, I saw some really good applicants and some really bad ones. Here are a few tips:
- Fill out an application online before you get there. That'll skip a step and make you look like you came prepared. They will print it out for you when you get there.
- You may want to print out your resume and bring it with you.
- Dress nice; this goes without saying, but I said it.
- Men: shave. The place may not beard-friendly.
- Smile, they love it and it WILL get you hired.
- They want naturally nice people, who believe in serving customers, not apathetic employees who need a job. So be nice, and don't get into a fight while you're there. This goes for any position available.
- Be yourself, really. These employers love professionalism, however, they are real people. Compliment their outfit, strike a conversation about real things. Don't ramble, but show that you have a personality and can keep a conversation. It will come in handy then and later when you work there.
Good luck!
